Summary

The eagerly awaited paperback edition of the No。 1 bestselling hardcover featuring a stand-alone sequel to The Outsider, and three additional irresistible novellas。

News people have a saying: 'If it bleeds, it leads'。 And a bomb at Albert Macready Middle School is guaranteed to lead any bulletin。

Holly Gibney of the Finders Keepers detective agency is working on the case of a missing dog - and on her own need to be more assertive - when she sees the footage on TV。 But when she tunes in again, to the late-night report, she realises something is not quite right about the correspondent who was first on the scene。 So begins 'If It Bleeds', a stand-alone sequel to the No。 1 bestselling THE OUTSIDER featuring the incomparable Holly on her first solo case - and also the riveting title story in Stephen King's brilliant new collection。

Dancing alongside are three more wonderful long stories from this 'formidably versatile author' (The Sunday Times) - 'Mr Harrigan's Phone', 'The Life of Chuck' and 'Rat'。 All four display the richness of King's storytelling with grace, humour, horror and breathtaking suspense。 A fascinating Author's Note gives us a wonderful insight into the origin of each story and the writer's unparalleled imagination

。。。more

What a marvelous collection of four stories this is! I rated this collection 4 stars so I can single out “The Life of Chuck” for 5 stars。 I enjoyed this story the most。 It’s theme (the world we contain and live) and how the story is told (in reverse) is wonderfully creative and moving。While each of the stories have the King’s trademark supernatural or macabre element, it’s not excessive。 It’s the human relationships —the friendship between a senior citizen and youngster; the husband and wife; th What a marvelous collection of four stories this is! In my opinion King's strength is in his wordy (and I mean that in a positive sense) novels and not in his short stories。 Nevertheless, I like to read his short stories in settings where I am short on time。 "If it Bleeds" is a collection of four of his latest short stories and is also the title of the best of the four stories。 I was a bit disappointed that it reintroduced another "Outsider" character because I felt that King's recent novel of the same name was one of his weakest。 However, I was p In my opinion King's strength is in his wordy (and I mean that in a positive sense) novels and not in his short stories。 Nevertheless, I like to read his short stories in settings where I am short on time。 "If it Bleeds" is a collection of four of his latest short stories and is also the title of the best of the four stories。 I was a bit disappointed that it reintroduced another "Outsider" character because I felt that King's recent novel of the same name was one of his weakest。 However, I was pleased that Holly Gibney (from the Mercedes series) was the leading star of this version。 This allowed her quirkiness and social awkwardness to be a part of the story whereas the previous novel (The Outsider) underplayed those quirks and gave a more prominent role to less interesting characters。 Even the version of the "Outsider" creature in this short story is more interesting than the one in the novel although I was surprised to see Gibney so readily accept its demise without further evidence (she always seemed so thorough & a stickler for detail)。 Of the other three stories in this collection, I didn't understand "The Life of Chuck"; liked the open-endedness of "Mr。 Harrigan's Phone" and liked how "The Rat" invoked memories of previous King novels where the protagonist is holed up alone (supposedly) in a cabin in the woods trying to find inspiration to write ( who would guess that a rat could help in that regard!)。 。。。more

Story 1 and 3 are catchy stories, good read as a first time Stephen King reader。 Story 2 was okay but it just got tiring and boring at the beginning of story 4 that I told myself I have had enough and just DNF it。

Paar korte verhalen erbij。Hoofdmoot was het titelverhaal met Holly Gibney, tot mijn verrassing。Wat leuk, leest lekker weg。

Mr。 King has done it again。 He writes with an ease that I haven't found in many other writers。 So, for that the book should get 5 stars, also for most of the stories。 But, I am not a short story person。 I don't know, maybe it's because they are over too quickly。 They can't take hold in my heart。 The institute I read last year, the stand two years ago and it and the talisman more than 30 years ago。 All these books I can still vividly remember, but these well written stories are already fading。But Mr。 King has done it again。 He writes with an ease that I haven't found in many other writers。 So, for that the book should get 5 stars, also for most of the stories。 But, I am not a short story person。 I don't know, maybe it's because they are over too quickly。 They can't take hold in my heart。 The institute I read last year, the stand two years ago and it and the talisman more than 30 years ago。 All these books I can still vividly remember, but these well written stories are already fading。But I might go back to Holly Gibney。 I would like to hear more about her。 。。。more

I always enjoy a Stephen King book。 This was a great collection of novellas, especially after reading the Outsider。

Mr。 Harrington’s Phone was refreshing and intriguing。 I did not like the other novellas as much。 If It Bleeds was not a genre I like。 However, what did I expect, right? This kind of thing is what Steven King does。

Whilst not in the same class as his earlier quartet of novellas, the incomparable Different Seasons, this collection of four new tales is an entertaining and chilling read for fans and casual King acquaintances alike

I used to read King with frightful anticipation。 Would I be able to go right to sleep or would the aftermath of his words keep my eyes open for awhile? His last works have disappointed。 The familiar horror is gone, replaced with something that doesn’t resonate with my memories of the earlier works。 This is no different。 Not one of the stories here made my heart beat any harder or my toes curl in horror or my fingers hesitant to turn the next page。 It just was。 I finished because there was nothin I used to read King with frightful anticipation。 Would I be able to go right to sleep or would the aftermath of his words keep my eyes open for awhile? Here are four novellas, three of which I thoroughly enjoyed and the fourth was kind of meh。 Mr。 Harrigan's Phone will be a movie on Netflix and If It Bleeds featured my current favorite King character Holly Gibney。 All in all an excellent way to spend a few days。 Highly recommended for King fans。 Here are four novellas, three of which I thoroughly enjoyed and the fourth was kind of meh。 Mr。 Harrigan's Phone will be a movie on Netflix and If It Bleeds featured my current favorite King character Holly Gibney。 All in all an excellent way to spend a few days。 Highly recommended for King fans。 。。。more

My reason for selecting this novella collection to read might be somewhat unorthodox。 At some point at the beginning of the pandemic lockdown I decided I needed to read more。 More hardcopy。 More fiction。 More fiction that I normally wouldn't select。 (No negative judgement about the genre) I'm trying to rewire my pandemic brain。 Or, maybe just dust it off a little bit。 I enjoyed The Rat the most。 The least, If It Bleeds。 Unfair to compare? A novella seemed like a good format for my short attention span right now。 Maybe that's why IIB was my least favorite。 It's the longest in this collection。 That's my only issue with it。 And, that is MY issue, not the author's。 This collection was, for me, a good choice for my purpose of reading more fiction right now。 。。。more

My last Stephen King book for now, until a movie version can convince me otherwise。 If It Bleeds was a collection of 4 short stories, 3 of which lack imagination and 1 of which was the only reason I bought this book - the sequel to The Outsider。 Perhaps King should have left The Outsider without a sequel。 None of the 4 books were what I'd call scary。 All were cliché and predictable。 The stories created suspense for the reader to press on, but offered nothing in the end。 Still, 4 stars for making My last Stephen King book for now, until a movie version can convince me otherwise。 If It Bleeds was a collection of 4 short stories, 3 of which lack imagination and 1 of which was the only reason I bought this book - the sequel to The Outsider。 Perhaps King should have left The Outsider without a sequel。 None of the 4 books were what I'd call scary。 All were cliché and predictable。 The stories created suspense for the reader to press on, but offered nothing in the end。 Still, 4 stars for making me want to finish the book。 。。。more
